 The thickness is quite thin, so do wear extra clothes under the protective clothes. The zipper is strong enough, so there would be no worry about the zipper malfunctioning. About the size, though, like others had mentioned, buy one or two sizes larger than your current wear size. I wear XL, so I should have gone XXL as it bottom half of the protective clothes would be too tight when you bend down.
